Description
The Halterner Stausee is a reservoir that consists of two sub-basins, a big north basin and a small south basin. In the north basin there is an island with a size of about 30 hectares. There is a nice walk around the north lake and during winter there is a chance to spot arctic migrants. Among the birds you can see are Toppet Lappedykker, Lille Lappedykker, Rødstrubet Lom, Fyrremejse, Topmejse and Stor Skallesluger, Hvinand and many other species of ducks.

Access
There is a 8,5 km long walking track around the lake that is accessible from all sides. You can either park in the town of Haltern or as I would recommend on the eastern shore near the Jugendherberge (Youthhostel).
