Description
The Kugelbake is a historic day beacon in the city of Cuxhaven at the northernmost point of Lower Saxony, where the River Elbe flows into the North Sea. The Kugelbake stands at a busy shipping lane and was once a vital nautical landmark. At this point, the estuary is about 18 km wide. Because the Kugelbake stands on the end of a dam and protrudes far into the water, it is a nice place for birding. You can overlook the beach, the harbor and the sea at the same time. Among the birds you can observe are Gravand, Knortegås, Kortnæbbet Gås, Sangsvane, Dværggås, Bjergand, Ederfugl, Fløjlsand, Sortand, Hvinand, Stor Skallesluger, Toppet Skallesluger, Klyde, Strandskade, Strandhjejle, Hjejle, Storspove, Stenvender, Islandsk Ryle, Sandløber, Almindelig Ryle, Sortgrå Ryle, Rødben, Rødstrubet Lom, Havørn, Bjerglærke, Stenpikker and Snespurv.
