These elongated salt pans on the island of Pag attract many birds. Good place to look for Hvidbrystet Præstekrave.
Solana Pag is the largest producer of sea salt in Croatia. The Pag Salt Pans are 500 metres wide and extend 6 kilometers southeast from the town of Pag. The elongated salt pans attract the typical birds with a preference for saline environments and there are always some nice birds to observe. Hvidbrystet Præstekrave and Stylteløber are regulars. An elevated gravel road runs along the south side of the salt pans. The road is nice and quiet, has plenty of places to stop or park and gives a good view of the salt pans. The disadvantage is that you are relatively far away from the birds, so you do need a spotting scope here to really see the birds well. Another option is to ask if you can enter the salt pans at the entrance to the Solana Pag salt company on the north side. The employees regularly give permission if you say that you want to watch birds.
Where you can see most birds depends largely on the water level. But in general most birds can be seen in the northern part of the salt pans. Among the birds you can encounter are Hvidbrystet Præstekrave, Gravand, Stylteløber, Hvidklire, Tinksmed, Rødben, Mudderklire, Skeand, Silkehejre, Toplærke, Rødrygget Tornskade, Biæder, Stenhøne and Markpiber.
The salt pans are located on the island of Pag. The island is connected to the mainland by a bridge and can be reached from Zadar within 30 minutes. The salt pans stretch 6 km southeast from the city of Pag. A gravel road in good condition runs along the south side of the salt pans. Coming from the north side, the first km is paved and busy with traffic, but the rest of the road is unpaved and quiet and has plenty of places to stop or park.
