Seasonal wetland renowned for its diverse range of resident and migratory birds. Over 220 species have been recorded.
Hasties Swamp National Park encompasses 56.6 ha and is a seasonal wetland. Open water, reeds, muddy edges and sedge land vary with the cycle of wet and dry seasons. The wetland is surrounded by open eucalypt forest. The area has a large two-storey bird hide, with informative signs and offers excellent waterbird viewing opportunities. The best time for birdwatching is during 'the dry' (April to October) as the swamp dries out and the area becomes an important refuge for waterbirds. Up to 1500 Magpie Goose may be seen at one time.
Hasties Swamp National Park is 4 km south of Atherton on the Atherton–Herberton Road. Turn left into Hastie Road and then right into Koci Road. The bird hide is 1.3 km along this well-formed, gravel road. Click on the P in the map for directions or coordinates. The toilets and lower floor of the bird hide are wheelchair accessible. Hasties Swamp National Park is open 24 hours a day. Parts of the park are occasionally closed for seasonal, planned burns. Domestic animals are not permitted in the park.
