Large (4 km in length) reservoir in Brecon Beacons National Park, surrounded by mixed woodland slopes, mountain and moorland.
Talybont Reservoir has two bird hides, car parking, and a nice cafe in the village. Shallow water, marshland and exposed mud at the top end attract dabbling ducks, waders especially sluka lesní, bekasina otavní, slučka malá, volavka popelavá, volavka stříbřitá and Chřástal vodní in autumn and winter. The woods have lejsek černohlavý, káně lesní, puštík obecný, brhlík lesní, šoupálek dlouhoprstý and lelek lesní. In the surrounding streams look for konipas horský, skorec vodní and bramborníček černohlavý. And on the moors may be koliha velká, kulík zlatý, Bělokur rousný, krkavec velký, linduška luční and bělořit šedý . The nearby canal has ledňáček říční.
Between Brecon and Abergavenny. Take the B4558 and turn south in Talybont village. A regular bus service runs through the village, from which it's a 2 mile walk to the reservoir. The circular route up to Tor y Foel is 5 km, with 250 metres of ascent. Stout boots, a hiking pole, snacks, a drink and waterproof clothing are recommended.
