A sandbar, mudflats, reedbeds and saltmarsh area on south side of the Waver / Wampool estuary at Moricombe Bay (not the same as Morecombe Bay further south).
The Solway Firth is an extensive and remote area of saltmarsh, mudflats, sandy coast, dunes and reedbeds attracting a wide range of wetland birds. Breeding and passage waders include vodouš rudonohý, kamenáček pestrý, ústřičník velký and koliha velká. Winter wildfowl and seabirds include lžičák pestrý, čírka obecná, labuť zpěvná, husa krátkozobá, berneška bělolící, hohol severní, kajka mořská, and divers, grebes, and auks. Also look out for volavka stříbřitá, ledňáček říční, skřivan polní, bramborníček černohlavý and linduška luční. Otters are possible, plus seals, porpoise and dolphin offshore. At Grune Point the receding sea leaves tidal lagoons ideal for rockpooling.
Leave M6 at Carlisle and follow A596 to Wigton, then signs to Calvo or Skinburness. Click on a P in the map to get directions.
