Longham Lakes are between the town's of Bournemouth and Ferndown in South East Dorset.

Description

The storage lakes are operated by Bournemouth Water and managed by South West Lakes Trust. The two lakes divided by a causeway have attracted rarities and more unusual species (see Extra Info below). The lakes are a popular walking and fishing area. The North Lake is used for fishing and the South Lake has canoeing and model boats, therefore an early morning visit is best. The site comprises of thick hedges overgrown in places with Blackberry (Rubus), areas of Willow (Salix), and rough grassland. Just West of the site is Hampreston meadows and the River Stour, this area is often flooded during most Winters, attracting large numbers of birds, the meadows are viewable from the lake boundary or by walking the footpath to All Saints Hampreston and Stapehill Church, Be Aware, during Winter the footpath can be extremely wet and may be flooded.

NOTE, the car park at Longham Lakes is exclusively for use by fishermen or those purchasing an annual pass from South West Lakes Trust.

Access

Leave Bournemouth North on the A348 signed Ferndown/Longham. On reaching Longham turn Right at sign for Borough Residents Household Recycling Centre on Millhams Road, the small car park is opposite the recycling centre. From Ferndown direction leave South on A348, pass Longham Lakes entrance (poorly signed), on sharp Left hand bend pass over River Stour bridge. Road bends to the Right, take first Left signed Borough Residents Household Recycling Centre into Millhams Road and use small car park opposite recycling centre.
