Brockholes is a nature reserve is situated in the flood-plain of the river Ribble. This former quarry extraction site is now a haven for many birds.
Brockholes was previously a sand and gravel quarry and has been transformed into a natural haven. Fields brimming with orchids and yellow rattle, woods shining bright with bluebells. The land has been regenerated as a mosaic of key habitats such as pools, reedbeds and woodland. In spring birds like čejka chocholatá, ústřičník velký, vodouš rudonohý and more breed on Meadow Lake and Number 1 Pit. In May, koliha malá roost in large numbers, while throughout spring and summer swifts, břehule říční and ostříž lesní create aerial displays over the lakes. Autumn is the time to see orlovec říční passing over Brockholes on their way back to Africa, while in winter, the reserve is packed with migratory waders. Other birds you can see here are stehlík obecný, mlynařík dlouhoocasý, sýkora uhelníček, rákosník proužkovaný, ledňáček říční, koliha velká and polák chocholačka.
