Bird rich ponds next to inland coastal meadows make for a bird rich combination.
The Norsholm area is quite vast and contains many minor sites shortly described here. The areas mentioned are marked with a star on the map. Press on a star and you can see the name of the area.
Grensholmsbron: Winter site with open waters even during harsh winters. Thousands of polák chocholačka (at most 2000), hundreds of morčák malý (only numerous during november and december), hohol severní (at most 700), kachna divoká (at most 600), and morčák velký (at most 600). Among more rarer wintering birds it is most known for wintering orel skalní, and ledňáček říční. Other not yearly winter visitors are křivka bělokřídlá, hýl křivčí during invasions, and potápka malá, kopřivka obecná, konopka žlutozobá, ostralka štíhlá, morčák prostřední, and čečetka bělavá during birdrich winters.
Norsholms coastal meadows: Reed free coastal meadows which are rich in waders during late spring and autumn. Although only if the water level is right (only during high water). Few arctic waders are found but vodouš kropenatý, kulík říční, vodouš tmavý, jespák bojovný, vodouš rudonohý, bekasina otavní, sluka lesní, vodouš bahenní and vodouš šedý. vodouš rudonohý, čejka chocholatá, and bekasina otavní breed. volavka bílá, ledňáček říční, and morčák prostřední are common.
Åby strandängar: Reed coated coastal meadows which are flooded during spring floods. They are then usually filled with early waders and ducks. bukač velký can be heard singing. All common dabbling ducks are usually found except čírka modrá. hvízdák eurasijský, kachna divoká, and kopřivka obecná. On these coastal meadows volavka bílá is often found.
Braskens grav: is an oxbow lake of the river Motala ström which often floods making it perfect for waders and ducks. čírka obecná is numerous, vodouš tmavý, and other common tringa-waders are often found along with slučka malá. volavka bílá is often found here. Slípka zelenonohá, and lyska černá breed.
Åby gård: complex of 3 ponds, the large, the small and fiskaretorpet. It is these ponds and the field around them which Norsholm is most known for. It has a bird observation tower. During spring it holds large amounts of ducks and swans with labuť velká, labuť zpěvná, kachna divoká, hvízdák eurasijský, kopřivka obecná, čírka obecná, lžičák pestrý, polák chocholačka, morčák malý, and morčák velký being common and čírka modrá and ostralka štíhlá, being rarer. Other common wetland birds are lyska černá, jeřáb popelavý, volavka popelavá. kormorán velký often roost here. Rarer birds roosting are potápka malá, Slípka zelenonohá, bukač velký (nearby reed areas), and volavka bílá. There are small islands in the pond which hold a small tern and gull colony. Theese islands also hold small amounts of waders often; koliha velká, vodouš rudonohý, čejka chocholatá, jespák bojovný and vodouš bahenní. During early spring the area is great for roosting geese and swans with hundreds of husa běločelá, husa velká, husa polní, berneška velká, and berneška bělolící during good years. often along with smaller amounts of labuť malá (rare), husta tundrová, husa krátkozobá, and berneška tmavá (rare).
Around these ponds kalous ušatý, potápka malá, Slípka zelenonohá, labuť zpěvná, potápka roháč, berneška velká, husa velká, čírka obecná, jeřáb popelavý, čejka chocholatá, bekasina otavní, lyska černá, racek chechtavý, racek mořský, labuť velká, rybák obecný, bažant obecný, polák chocholačka, kachna divoká, hohol severní, and southern konipas luční breed along with more common birds.
During autumn large amounts of ducks can rest (but less than during spring). The small islands grow during dry summers and can some years hold arctic waders like jespák obecný, jespák křivozobý, and jespák šedý. slavík modráček, and strnad severní can sometimes be found on the surrounding fields.
The areas are located north, west and southwest of the town of Norsholm. There are many parking spaces available. Press a P on the map for directions to a parking.
