The area around Killingholmen is a scenic area where the river Storån meets the narrow bay Slätbaken. Around Hov you can find open coastal meadows.

Description

The birds start to arrive at Killingholmen in February when the ice starts to loose its grip on the coastal waters. Then ducks start to rest in the shallow parts of the bay; polák chocholačka (at most 100) and around 1000 morčák velký can be found. Also the rarer winter ducks like čírka obecná, polák velký, morčák malý, polák kaholka and morčák prostřední. A few hundred geese and around 100 labuť zpěvná feed on the areas fields and coastal meadows around march. In March the other early spring birds also arrive; skřivan polní, holub hřivnáč, špaček obecný and čejka chocholatá. In spring you can find sýkořice vousatá in the reed beds.

Year round krahujec obecný, orel mořský and káně lesní are the common predatory birds. But orel skalní, moták pilich and luňák červený pass by the area. Most common passerine birds arrive in March/April. Slätbaken is a stopping point for passerine birds, which makes it common to find uncommonly early skřivan lesní and drozd brávník.

From late February and in March the owls in the area can be heard calling. puštík obecný kulíšek nejmenší and výr velký are sometimes heard. In March more geese start to arrive and not only the common berneška velká and husa velká. Also husa běločelá (at most 67) and berneška bělolící (at most 100). husa polní, husta tundrová and husa krátkozobá are sometimes found. Also labuť malá has been observed.

On the coastal meadows large amounts of passerine bird start to rest in the end of March and in April. linduška luční, konipas bílý, konopka obecná are the most common. Among these linduška skalní is regularly seen. In the large grassy areas kalous pustovka can be found. On the coastal meadows pisík obecný, vodouš kropenatý, vodouš rudonohý, hvízdák eurasijský, kopřivka obecná, lžičák pestrý, vodouš bahenní, kulík zlatý, bekasina otavní and potápka roháč. Most common dabbling ducks are found but only čírka obecná is numerous (at most 70). At the Torpa damm čírka modrá and ostralka štíhlá have been seen, along with smaller amounts of other ducks.

In april large amounts of thrushes move past the fields and coastal meadows. Hundreds of drozd zpěvný, drozd cvrčala, drozd kvíčala and drozd brávník are seen. In the end of May and April most birds disappear, except for the breeders.

In May the latest passerine birds, and night active birds arrive. On the fields moták lužní, sokol stěhovavý and chřástal polní are found. racek žlutonohý sometimes rest on the coastal meadows in May. hýl rudý often sings here. On the meadows berneška bělolící, husa velká, berneška velká, kopřivka obecná, vodouš rudonohý, čejka chocholatá, potápka roháč, polák chocholačka, hohol severní and lyska černá breed. In the area strakapoud malý, ťuhýk obecný, čírka obecná and labuť zpěvná breed. At Storåns river mouth you can observe ledňáček říční.

During autumn Hov strandängar becomes better for birding. From July the area is a good site for wading birds such as čejka chocholatá, koliha velká, kulík písečný, kulík říční, pisík obecný, bekasina otavní, kulík zlatý, vodouš šedý, vodouš rudonohý, jespák bojovný, vodouš bahenní and vodouš kropenatý. These are all common, while jespák malý, jespák obecný, koliha malá, jespák šedý and jespák křivozobý are more rare.

Other wetland birds are often found. Among the rarer birds ledňáček říční, rybák velkozobý, slavík modráček and volavka bílá can be noted. Large amounts of gulls, geese and terns can be found, especially husa velká which some years have been found as numerous as 3000.

Large amounts of passerine birds are found in the meadow areas. The most numerous passerine birds are stehlík obecný (250 at most), vlaštovka obecná (500 at most), bramborníček hnědý, bělořit šedý, špaček obecný (600 at most). Later in autumn potápka malá, slučka malá, konopka žlutozobá, potápka žlutorohá, morčák malý and polák kaholka are sometimes found.

Inre Slätbaken is located east of the town of Söderköping. Parking can be found around Hov and several other places. Click on a P in the map for directions to a parking spot.
