Description

Gazetted in 2007, with almost 70% of the total area covered by forest, represented within the altitude region of oak and beech habitats – at lower altitudes hornbeam and maple, oak on southern slopes; at higher altitudes beech, and at northern slopes planted conifers – this place offers a somewhat different set of birds.

About 85 forest birds have been recorded so far. Without any waterbirds, this is impressive in its own right. The most exciting area is the very top, the conifers planted around the Unknown Soldier Memorial (70 species recorded on this spot so far).

Birds to look for: 6 species of woodpeckers including strakapoud prostřední, žluna šedá, and datel černý , šoupálek krátkoprstý, králíček obecný; in winter joined by šoupálek dlouhoprstý, králíček ohnivý, hýl obecný, pěnkava jikavec, čížek lesní, sýkora uhelníček, křivka obecná, drozd brávník, drozd cvrčala , dlask tlustozobý, sometimes even rarities such as kos horský or pěvuška podhorní.

Access

There's one lane, one-way road going up and down the mountain. Otherwise, the foothills (bus stop "Avala") are reachable by city buses 401, 403, 405, 407 and 408.

From May to August, on Saturday and Sunday city bus 400 goes all the way to the mountain top. The 400 goes every 40 minutes and that is far from enough time, so plan for 80 or more minutes (120, etc.).
