Palheiro Gardens are located to the north-east of Funchal and comprise formal botanical gardens and a wilder area of wooded gorge (Ribeiro do Inferno).
For a modest entrance fee, Palheiro Gardens provide convenient opportunities to see several Madeiran landbirds including holub trokaz (we saw at least 8), Madeira Firecrest, Madeira Chaffinch, rorýs jednobarvý as well as more widespread species such as pěnice černohlavá and poštolka obecná. The gardens are not as expansive as those at Monte but this is a particularly accessible site for holub trokaz, making for relaxed birding with plenty for non-birding family and friends to enjoy. Cardinal and other butterflies are plentiful while there are Perez Frogs in the ornamental ponds. There's a tea-shop and WCs.
Palheiro Gardens are located at Caminho da Quinta do Palheiro , 32 São Gonçalo, 9060-255 Funchal. Open Daily from 9:00 to 17:00. Entry Price: € 11 (2024). There is a car park within the gardens and the public bus number 37 runs to/from the centre of Funchal. Press P on the map for directions to the parking.
