Description
Lagoas de Bertiandos e São Pedro d'Arcos is a protected area that is located in the northwest region of Portugal, in a zone of interaction between the Mediterranean and Atlantic climates. This set of biogeographic factors translates into the presence of high natural importance ecosystems, namely hygrophilous forests, wet pastures, lagoons, rivers and pine forests. These different habitats allow the presence of a large number of bird species, with more than 100 species reported so far. The most part of the protected area is covered by a broadleaf forest, where it is possible to find several birds such as sýkora uhelníček, sýkora parukářka, sýkora koňadra, sýkora modřinka, šoupálek dlouhoprstý, střízlík obecný, pěnice černohlavá, drozd zpěvný, drozd cvrčala, hýl obecný, budníček menší, budníček iberský, pěnkava obecná, červenka obecná, sojka obecná, strakapoud velký and žluna zelená. In this dense hygrophilous forest there are several wetlands, of which the São Pedro and Mimoso lagoons stand out. In these two lagoons there are observatories that facilitate the observation and detection of species such as čírka obecná, potápka malá, lyska černá, volavka popelavá, volavka bílá, volavka červená, volavka stříbřitá, Chřástal vodní, bekasina otavní, kormorán velký, cetie jižní and rákosník obecný. The adjacent areas of the protected area (agricultural fields, pine and eucalyptus forests) also provide the observation of several species, namely skřivan polní, linduška luční, konopka obecná, bramborníček černohlavý, špaček černý, špaček obecný, straka obecná, vrána černá, krahujec obecný, jestřáb lesní andpoštolka obecná.

Access
This protected area is located in Ponte de Lima, Viana do Castelo. You can park your car in the Interpretive Center and explore all the area on foot. From the Interpretation Center there are several marked trails, of varying length (the shortest is 1.6 km and the longest is 12.5 km). These routes cross the most characteristic habitats of this protected area and allow the observation of a large number of species. If you don't want walk the marked trails, you can just walk along the wooden walkways to the observatories (See the map below).
