Description
The harbour of Funchal is a fairly large harbour and is mainly used for tourists and as a stopover for ships that want to cross the Atlantic Ocean. The area provides an ideal roosting habitat for many species of shorebird, like Racek středomořský, racek žlutonohý and racek chechtavý. The shoreline is used by many species of wader, like koliha malá, kamenáček pestrý, jespák písečný and pisík obecný.
The harbour waters are a feeding area for multiple species of tern, being mainly rybák obecný and rybák rajský, but sometimes also rybák severní.
Just outside the harbour and onto the Atlantic Ocean, large flocks of buřňák šedý can be observed. Small numbers of buřňák Bulwerův can be seen too. Other species of shearwater can be seen during migration, like buřňák severní and buřňák kanárský.
In the last decades, many species of rare migratory birds have been observed in this harbour, like racek delawarský, racek polární and, in 2011, a kvakoš žlutočelý.
