Description
The Steenwaard is a large floodplain on the northern side of the Lek river in the province of Utrecht. The area contains a large waterbody with surrounding meadows with scattered bushes and trees. Especially in winter, the waterbody is an interesting place for waterfowl, like ducks and geese. Large flocks of hvízdák eurasijský, kopřivka obecná and polák chocholačka are common. Other regular ducks are ostralka štíhlá, čírka obecná, polák velký and lžičák pestrý. If you're lucky, a morčák malý or morčák velký is present.
Some parts of the lake' shore are very steep and sandy. Here, a colony of břehule říční is present every year. They can be observed from the other side of the lake.
The surrounding meadows, especially on the eastern side of the train bridge, are used as a resting area for large flocks of geese, being mainly berneška bělolící and husa běločelá. Rare species of geese can be found within these large flocks, like berneška rudokrká or husa bělostná, but you need to have luck on your side.
In winter, the area is also home to large flocks of volavka bílá. They can be seen foraging near the shores of the lake and on the open meadows. In summer, small numbers of kolpík bílý can be present here too.
The surrounding meadows are ideal breeding habitat for species like skřivan polní and linduška luční. Scattered across the measdows, large patches of brambles are present. Species like bramborníček černohlavý and bramborníček hnědý can be seen on top of these bushes. Also pěnice pokřovní and pěnice hnědokřídlá can be regularly heard.
On the western side of the area, reedbeds are present, which are a good spot for species like rákosník obecný and strnad rákosní. Adjacent to this part of the area, agricultural fields are present, which provide a good habitat for koroptev polní.
On the southern side of the area, the Lek river is present. Here, species like potápka roháč and potápka malá and lots of other waterbirds can be found. There are also a couple of puddles located on this side. This is always a good spot for waders, like vodouš kropenatý and vodouš šedý and, if you're lucky, a linduška horská. On the eastern side of the bridge, a house is located with some surrounding pastures. Here, a sýček obecný can be seen and heard regularly. The bridge can be a good spot for sokol stěhovavý.

Vooral in de winter is het water een interessante plek voor watervogels, zoals eenden en ganzen. Grote groepen hvízdák eurasijský, kopřivka obecná en polák chocholačka komen vaak voor. Andere eenden die je kunt zien zijn ostralka štíhlá, čírka obecná, polák velký en lžičák pestrý. Als je geluk hebt, is er een morčák malý of morčák velký aanwezig.
Sommige delen van de oever van het meer zijn erg steil en zanderig. Hier is elk jaar een kolonie břehule říční aanwezig. Ze zijn te zien vanaf de andere kant van het meer.
De omliggende weilanden, vooral aan de oostkant van de treinbrug, worden gebruikt als rustplaats voor grote groepen ganzen, voornamelijk berneška bělolící en husa běločelá. Er zijn zeldzame soorten ganzen te vinden in deze grote groepen, zoals berneška rudokrká of husa bělostná, maar dan moet je het geluk wel aan je zijde hebben. In de winter is het gebied ook de thuisbasis van grote aantallen volavka bílá. Ze foerageren in de buurt van de oevers van het meer en op de open weiden. De omliggende weilanden zijn ideaal broedgebied voor soorten als skřivan polní en linduška luční. Verspreid over de weilanden zijn veel braamstruiken aanwezig. Bovenop deze struiken zijn soorten als bramborníček černohlavý en bramborníček hnědý te zien. Ook zijn pěnice pokřovní en pěnice hnědokřídlá regelmatig te horen. Aan de westkant van het gebied zijn rietvelden aanwezig, die een goede plek zijn voor soorten als rákosník obecný en strnad rákosní. Grenzend aan dit deel van het gebied zijn agrarische akkers aanwezig, die leefgebied zijn van de koroptev polní.
Aan de zuidkant van het gebied stroomt de rivier de Lek. Hier zijn soorten zoals potápka roháč en potápka malá en tal van andere watervogels te vinden. Aan deze kant bevinden zich ook een paar plassen. Dit is altijd een goede plek voor steltlopers, zoals vodouš kropenatý en vodouš šedý en, als je geluk hebt, een linduška horská. Aan de oostkant van de brug staat een huis met wat weilanden eromheen. Hier is regelmatig een sýček obecný te zien en te horen. De brug kan een goede plek zijn voor sokol stěhovavý.

Access
You can park your car on the eastern side of the area. From there, you can enter the area on foot. You'll have to climb some fences (some steps have been placed to make this easier). The area is also used by cattle.
