Description
The Molenkade area (approx. 50 ha), located along the A2 motorway, is part of the wet ecological connection zone Diefdijk with marshes, open water, moist hay meadows, flowery grasslands and willow groves. It is also part of the Dutch Waterline. A striking attraction is the sawn-through war bunker. Adjacent to the area is De Waai, a deep pool created by a dike breach. Mixed forest has also been planted.
There is a long jetty in the large water storage lake. kormorán velký and gulls often gather here. Gulls forage at a nearby dumpster company and rest on the bollards here. They are easy to see with a telescope. Note, among others racek bělohlavý and Racek středomořský in different life stages, besides other gull species, including racek černohlavý and even racek polární have been observed. In the winter period diving ducks such as polák chocholačka and polák velký and sometimes morčák malý swim here.
The Waai lake, which rarely freezes over during frost, is a good place to see gulls and waterfowl, such as hvízdák eurasijský, kopřivka obecná, čírka obecná, lžičák pestrý, volavka bílá and potápka roháč. Sometimes potápka malá can be spotted.
The rest of the area is covered with willow groves, reed beds, wet grassland and pools. In the summer half of the year you can find marsh birds such as cetie jižní, rákosník proužkovaný, cvrčilka zelená, rákosník obecný, slavík modráček, strnad rákosní, kukačka obecná, moták pochop and volavka červená. Also other birds such as budníček větší are singing in abundance here in spring. In the winter half year you sometimes encounter Chřástal vodní, bekasina otavní and sluka lesní.

Nederlands: Het natuurontwikkelingsgebied Molenkade (ca 50 ha) gelegen langs de snelweg A2 maakt deel uit van de natte ecologische verbindingszone Diefdijk met moeras, open water, vochtige hooilanden, bloemrijke graslanden en wilgengrienden. Ook is het onderdeel van de Hollandse Waterlinie. Opvallende attractie is de doorgezaagde oorlogsbunker. Tegen het gebied aan ligt De Waai, een diepe plas ontstaan bij een dijkdoorbraak. Daar is ook gemengd bos aangeplant.
In de grote waterbergingsplas ligt een lange steiger. Hier verzamelen zich vaak kormorán velký en meeuwen. Meeuwen foerageren bij een nabijgelegen afvalcontainerbedrijf en rusten hier op de meerpalen. Met de telescoop zijn ze goed te bekijken. Let o.a. op racek bělohlavý en Racek středomořský in verschillende levenstadia, naast ook de andere soorten meeuwen, waaronder racek černohlavý en zelfs racek polární zijn waargenomen. Er zwemmen in de winterperiode vaak duikeenden als polák chocholačka en polák velký en soms morčák malý. De plas De Waai, die zelden dichtvriest bij vorst, is een goede plek om meeuwen en watervogels te zien, zoals hvízdák eurasijský, kopřivka obecná, čírka obecná , lžičák pestrý, volavka bílá en potápka roháč. Soms is er de potápka malá te vinden.
De rest van het gebied is bedekt met wilgenbosjes, rietvelden, nat grasland en poelen. Hier kan met in het zomerhalfjaar moerasvogels aantreffen als cetie jižní, rákosník proužkovaný , cvrčilka zelená ,rákosník obecný slavík modráček , strnad rákosní, kukačka obecná , moták pochop en volavka červená. Ook allerlei struweelvogels zoals budníček větší zingen hier volop in de lente. In het winterhalfjaar kom je soms Chřástal vodní, bekasina otavní en sluka lesní tegen.

Access
You can have a good overview of the water storage lake from the Diefdijk. A telescope for the seagulls is recommended. There is a small parking lot below the dike near the sawn-through bunker. From there you can walk through the area. Another entrance for a walk is on the southeast side. Park along Sonsbrug and walk down the Molenkade. The De Waai lake can be viewed from the Diefdijk. Watch out for traffic on the dike. Click on a P in the map for directions.

Nederlands: De waterbergingsplas kun je goed overzien vanaf de Diefdijk. Een telescoop voor de meeuwen is aan te bevelen. Beneden de dijk bij de doorgezaagde bunker is een kleine parkeerplaats. Vandaaruit kan je het gebied doorwandelen. Een ander ingang voor een wandeling is aan de zuidoostkant. Parkeer langs Sonsbrug en loop de Molenkade af.
