Description
The mouth of the Ameca river is located on the outskirts of Puerto Vallarta, where the river flows into the Banderas Bay on the Pacific Ocean. An area of wetlands, which attract both marine and terrestrial birds. From waders to trogons, and kingfishers to birds of prey.
Birds that can be spotted along the shores include Whimbrel, Wilson's Plover, Western Sandpiper, Little Blue Heron, Tricolored Heron, Snowy Egret, Yellow-crowned Night Heron, White Ibis, Roseate Spoonbill, Anhinga, Magnificent Frigatebird, Wood Stork and Brown Pelican. In the trees along the shores you can find Yellow-winged Cacique, Citreoline Trogon, Golden-cheeked Woodpecker and San Blas Jay.

Access
The Ameca River mouth is located west of the city center of Puerto Vallarta, at the point where the river empties into the Bahía de Banderas. You can start your walk at the edge of the town near the golf course (1) or a bit further along the beach at Boca de Tomates (2). Press a P on the map for directions to a parking spot. The walking route indicated on the map is starting from the golf course and is about 2,5 km one way. Note that after heavy rainfall with large water discharge through the river, parts of the river mouth may be inaccessible.
