Horsh Ehden is a nature reserve located in the north of Lebanon. It was declared an important bird area (IBA) in 1992. Great spot to watch autumn migration.
Ehden Raptor Count offers a view of 300 degrees from northeast to the north, the west and the South. This makes it useful to cover different migration routes. Birds often fly close past the count site giving excellent views and allowing excellent photography opportunities. In quiet days with few migrating birds to see you still have a stunning view over the Horsh Ehden nature reserve and the surrounding villages. The nature around the spot is beautiful.
Birds that can be observed include orel volavý, orel křiklavý, krahujec krátkoprstý, krahujec obecný, orel stepní, včelojed lesní, orlík krátkoprstý, moták pochop, čáp černý, čáp bílý, poštolka rudonohá, ostříž lesní, vlha pestrá, jeřáb popelavý and many more.
The Ehden Raptor Count site is located just north of the town of Ehden and easily accessible by car, as it is not far away from the entrance of the reserve. It takes only about 50 minutes to drive there from the center of Beirut. A short to medium level walk is required to reach the site.
Birding in Lebanon can be delicate, make sure proper authorisations have been requested from local authorities or the reserve rangers before engaging in using spotting scopes in the area. For the best migration experience, guides or local birding experts are of great help. Being within the nature reserve means that hunting is prohibited and there should be no hunters to bother you.
