Description
The forests of slopes in Gauja National Park with old deciduous trees attract less common species of woodpeckers (strakapoud bělohřbetý, datlík tříprstý, datel černý and strakapoud prostřední). Relatively often spotted are the elsewhere rare budníček zelený, lejsek malý and locally common jeřábek lesní. puštík bělavý has started nesting in the park, and the smallest owl of Latvia — kulíšek nejmenší — is also seen more often. Many chřástal polní and some species of warblers, which are not common in Western Europe (cvrčilka říční, rákosník pokřovní), are found in the riverside meadows of Gauja.
