Farmland and marshy area facing the sea. A stopover site for many waders, a wintering site for waders, ducks and geese and a good seawatching point.
Riserva Naturale Macchiatonda is a site of national relevance for wintering kulík zlatý. It's a very good site to watch birds during spring and autumn migration (waders, ducks, herons). It's a nesting site of kalandra zpěvná and other larks. It's the best place in northern Latium to see racek Audouinův and other seabirds. It's quite common to see raptors hunting here from Tolfa hills, e.g. luňák červený, luňák hnědý and orlík krátkoprstý. Note that the area is not always accessible and only from September to May, see the details below.
Access to the area is possible just from September to May, on Thursday afternoon (2:30 pm) and on Saturday and Sunday morning (10:15 am) and afternoon (1:00 pm). The entrance is on the Aurelia road, km 49,900, through a yellow gate. Click on the P in the map for directions. It's possible to park cars inside, then the best way to visit the reserve is walking, but also biking. The ranger service can be contacted by phone +39 3452554653.
