The Tolfa hills are a special protection area (SPA) of 67573 hectares. It's the most important site in cental Italy for raptors and passerines.

Description

Monti della Tolfa (Tolfa hills) include coppice woods and grasslands where "maremmana" cows are bred in the wild. The high biodiversity of plants and animals supports a high bird diversity. Among the breeding birds are čáp černý, luňák červený, luňák hnědý, orlík krátkoprstý, včelojed lesní, Dytík úhorní, lelek lesní, mandelík hajní, kalandra zpěvná, skřivánek krátkoprstý, skřivan lesní, linduška úhorní, pěnice kaštanová, ťuhýk obecný, ťuhýk menší and strnad zahradní. The area includes some nature reserves (Monterano, Marturanum, Faggeta di Allumiere, Caldara di Manziana), hunting areas and villages.

Access

It's possible to reach the area by car, train (Rome-Civitavecchia and Rome-Viterbo railways) or bus. The villages of Allumiere, Tolfa, Canale Monterano an Barbarano Romano are the best starting points to explore Tolfa hills hiking or mountainbiking. A 10 km circular walk departing from the village of Tolfa is indicated on the map.
