This wetland area in Vedanthangal attracts thousands of migratory birds, making it one of the best birdwatching sites in South India.
Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary is a 30-hectare protected Ramsar wetland that hosts huge numbers of birds particularly during the migratory season. Species that can be seen in great numbers include Painted Stork, Asian Openbill, Oriental Darter, Black-headed Ibis, Spot-billed Pelican, and other waterfowl. Various other bird species can be seen in the surrounding trees and shrubs. The best time to visit this sanctuary is from November to March.
Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary is located near Maduranthakam, about 75 kilometres from Chennai, and is most easily reached by car. There is an entrance fee.
The area has a well-developed infrastructure. Visitors walk along a paved walkway on the edge of the wetland. Birds can be observed from a viewing tower and platforms. Also explanatory information boards and paintings of bird can be seen.
