Description
The Christou river is a fairly large wetland and saltmarsh area just west of Skala Kallonis. In general, the area is fairly wet, but this depends on the season and the amount of rainfall during winter. The creek near the ocean, though, always holds water. The wetland area is a great spot for waders, like pisila čáponohá, kulík mořský and vodouš šedý. During the breeding season, the surrounding sandy areas are used as breeding grounds for kulík mořský and kulík říční. Also, the higher parts of the area, mainly just southwest of the closest hotel (see map), is a great spot to observe Dytík úhorní.
Around the wetland area, fields are just as foraging ground by harriers, like moták pochop and moták pilich. Large flocks of pipits and wagtails can be seen here too. Near the beach, you can observe gulls and terns.
North of the road, you can find the inland part of the river and also some salt marshes. During migration, this part is great to observe waders, storks and egrets, like jespák šedý and čáp černý. You might have the chance to see ledňáček říční during winter here.
