Description

The reservoir of Vilstalsee was created by the damming of the Vils river, which runs through the countryside of southern Bavaria, on its way to joining the Danube. The lake is surrounded by reedbeds, and to the west the shallow winding river valley, bordered by protected meadow, shrub and creek habitats.

A nice range of waterfowl and migratory waterbirds can be found here, including: labuť velká, kachna divoká, kajka mořská, potápka malá, Slípka zelenonohá, lyska černá, čejka chocholatá, volavka popelavá, volavka bílá, káně lesní, ledňáček říční, straka obecná, sýkora babka, červenka obecná, polák velký, potápka malá, potápka roháč and slavík modráček.

One can find a good elevated viewpoint from the dam overlooking the lake (marked on the map). A spotting scope is recommended.

Access

The Vilstalsee is located between the larger villages of Marklkofen and Reisbach, and the smaller village of Warth sits directly to the north. Cars can be parked at different spots along the country roads, or there is a carpark nearby at the Freibad/swimming pool (P on the map).

The nearest public transport is the 310 Bus, which comes from the town of Landshut main station, this takes 1 hr to the village of Marklkofen (1). From there it is a 1 hour walk to the best viewing spot on the dam road.

It is a 1 hr/16 km bike ride from the town of Dingolfing, which also has regional trains.

The north and east sides of the lake can be explored easily by bike and foot, but to explore the river and meadow area to the west, a little more adventurous walking is to be expected.
