Fish pond area with reed beds.
Teichgebiet Rauden-Mönau is a typical fish pond area of the UNESCO-Biosphere reserve Oberlausitzer Heide- und Teichlandschaft (Upper Lausitian heather and pond landscape). The area, as many others in the reserve, mainly consists of a cluster of shallow fish ponds of various sizes and shapes sourrounded by by reed beds. This fish pond area is comparatively intensively used and close to a small town, but nevertheless still worth visiting. The variety of habitats around these ponds is boosting also the biodiversity of bird species. The orel mořský is the flagship and proud of the reserve.
Teichgebiet Rauden-Mönau is located 18 km north of Bautzen, near the villages of Rauden and Mönau. There is no dedicated parking area for cars, so you have to search for some niche beside the streets, an example is given on the map. Please do not block any small path for the local people, fisherman and forestry.
You can explore the whole Biosphere reserve best on a bike tour. There is the dedicated orel mořský-Bikeway, see the link below.
