The lake of Rothsee has a size of 50 ha, of which approx. 20 ha are a nature reserve. The main dam is 160 hectares (10 hectares of which are a nature reserve).
On the way to my holiday destination I ended up at the Rothsee in Bavaria. Near the A9. You can park close by. The lake is divided into two parts with a piece of nature reserve. In this area you can find a large colony of volavka popelavá. Other birds you can see around the Rothsee are vrabec polní, volavka popelavá, rehek domácí, sýkora babka, drozd brávník, ťuhýk obecný, datel černý, sýkora koňadra, budníček menší, pěnkava obecná, luňák hnědý and strnad obecný.
On the southern shore of the second part there is an information pavilion of the State Association for Bird Protection (LBV). In summer and winter, in spring and autumn, interested visitors can now get tips and information. Various display boards provide information.
The Rothsee is one of the better places in the area for resting water birds in winter (up to 3000 in October / November), including often rarer species ( polák kaholka, turpan hnědý and divers). Plus, almost anything can pop up during the migratory season - when the water level is low and the mud banks are exposed, waders find perfect conditions. In recent years, the Rothsee has attracted a huge list of rarities, notably terns (annual rybák velkozobý and rybák dlouhoocasý , but extremely rare species such as the rybák oranžovozobý are also observed) and waders ( jespák mořský, jespák rezavý and others).
By Car: Leave the motorway A 9 at the exit 55 "Allersberg" and follow the signposts towards "Hilpoltstein". Shortly afterwards you come to a roundabout, take here the third exit. After another 3 kilometers you reach the junction to "Kronmühle". For approaching the first car park turn here right.
A second car park is situated 2 km south of that junction and is signed as "Seezentrum". Generally, all car parks are just in the winter for free.
The car parks around the lakes are only in the winter for free.
