This 398 hectare nature reserve is good for birding all year round. Not many people visit it though.
The Nienwohlder Moor is a nature reserve in Schleswig-Holstein. The 398 hectare nature reserve lies northeast of Hamburg between the villages of Nienwohld, Nahe,Itzstedt and Sülfeld. It protects a drained and mostly gated high bog area, which is the largest and best preserved bog remnant in Schleswig-Holstein. It is now an open bog with numerous water-filled peat engravings surrounded by a bog forest in the area of former industrial use. The nature reserve is also an important habitat for birds. There are various waders such as koliha velká and bekasina otavní as well as ducks like lžičák pestrý, čírka obecná, čírka modrá and polák chocholačka. Also many linduška lesní, linduška luční and bramborníček černohlavý. moták pochop and ťuhýk šedý can be found too. The moorland area is good for jeřáb popelavý which are now breeding here again. In the wooded moorland areas you can find various woodpecker species and ťuhýk obecný and many songbirds.
Walking or explore by bike. Parking in Nahe or Nienwohld.
