In the Kranichstein Forest you can find a multitude of traces that testify to courtly hunting in the Middle Ages.
Due to the location of Kranichsteiner Wald in the transition area of different climatic and geological influences and due to its historical forest management, the Kranichstein Forest is home to an enormous variety of habitats and thus many rare animal and plant species. There is a mosaic of pronounced mixed oak and beech forests with beautiful old wood stocks through to wet forest habitats, forest meadows and small-scale fens.
Parking place: Bioversum at Jagdschloss Kranichstein, Kranichsteiner Straße 253, 64289 Darmstadt. The 14 km circular hike Kranichsteiner Waldweg marked M3 starts at the train station in Messel and is also shown on the map below.
