Two smaller lakes left over of former sandmining. The bigger one is for recreational use, the smaller one is the better birdingplace.
During migration at Kiesgrube Niederweimar there is a chance to see locally uncommon birds resting on the water or on the meadows next to it. Also there are releatively large reed and shrub areas attracting roosting and breeding birds.
Easily accessible by bike or train from the closeby trainstation Niederweimar. Also there is a car-parking area next to the bigger lake Surfsee Niederweimar and in the village around the trainstation.
Unfortunately the area is very close to the a big road B3, which makes it quite noisy. Also the bigger lake is used for recreation and therefore it is suggested to visit the area in early morning.
