Description
Lake Itzelberg was artificially created by the Cistercian monks from the former Königsbronn monastery who dammed the Brenz river. For centuries, the water was important for fish farming. At the inlet of the river Brenz in Lake Itzelberg a bird sanctuary island has been created. This wetland biotope attracts many birds. Birds you can observe include drozd kvíčala, konipas horský, ledňáček říční, potápka malá, Chřástal vodní, lyska černá and volavka popelavá. In the winter months, many waterfowl, especially polák velký, polák chocholačka and sometimes morčák velký, rest on the lake and then travel on to their breeding grounds in spring. The lake is a popular local recreation area in summer, so this is not the best time for birding. A circular hiking trail of 1,5 km leads around the lake.
