Description
Gedenkstätte Stresow is a little memorial of World War II located in the Wendland in midst of a lot of nature. Right next to the memorial is a small lake, where you can often see morčák malý, morčák velký and several species of duck in Winter.
A few hundred meters futher there is an observation tower with a nice view over the partially flooded meadows and small bodies of water. In winter they are getting used as a wintering and migration place for thousands of ducks and geese such as ostralka štíhlá, hohol severní, hvízdák eurasijský, kopřivka obecná, čírka obecná, čírka modrá, lžičák pestrý, polák velký, polák chocholačka, husice liščí, berneška bělolící, husa běločelá, husa polní and labuť zpěvná. If you are lucky than you can spot a ťuhýk šedý in the bushes.
During migration times many waders visit the area. You can observe čejka chocholatá, jespák obecný, kulík písečný, kulík říční, koliha velká, břehouš černoocasý, pisík obecný, bekasina otavní, vodouš bahenní, vodouš kropenatý, vodouš tmavý, vodouš rudonohý, vodouš šedý and sometimes jespák bojovný. On the water bodies you can sometimes spot grebes such as potápka rudokrká or potápka malá or see a ledňáček říční.
For a better look there is a route on the dike through the meadows so you can see the whole area from different sides. In the summer there are many swallows and jeřáb popelavý , herons and čáp bílý. volavka popelavá and volavka bílá are not uncommon, with a bit of luck you even can see a pair of čáp černý.
From the power poles, the bushes and out of the reed you can hear the songs of strnad rákosní, strnad luční, strnad obecný, pěnice hnědokřídlá, rákosník proužkovaný, rákosník obecný, rákosník velký, bramborníček hnědý, bramborníček černohlavý, skřivan polní and see for example ťuhýk obecný or konipas luční.
Over the whole year you can spot many different birds of prey. From the observation tower you can see moták pochop flying over the reed beds, in the whole area káně lesní, luňák červený and poštolka obecná are not uncommon. On very good days you can even see a sokol stěhovavý or včelojed lesní. Also often seen are luňák hnědý, moták pilich and orlovec říční and sometimes more down by the river Aland in the trees sit one or two orel mořský.

Access
Feuchtwiesen Gedenkstätte Stresow is located east of the villages of Kapern and Gummern and north of the village of Aulosen. There are two roads to the memorial Stresow. One is a dirt road from Kapern, safer is the normal road from Aulosen. On the memorial is a parking space, where you can park your car. Press P on the map for directions to the parking. From there it is better to walk or to ride a bike. You can also easily connect the visit with a bike tour through the beautiful landscape of Wendland.
