The highest mountain of the Black Forest offers a variety of mountain birds.
The Feldberg is the highest mountain of the Black Forest and holds a variety of typical mountain birds of the region. Many breeding birds arrive late, so that a visit in May or June is particularly rewarding. Best spot for zvonohlík citronový is around Todtnauer Hütte. tetřev hlušec still occurs in the area, but is very difficult to find. Best chances for datlík tříprstý are along the "Felsenweg" (northernmost section of the circuit). In some years kulík hnědý rest on the alpine meadows in early September. pěvuška podhorní and even pěnkavák sněžný can be found occasionally in late spring, particularly near the monument on top of the mountain.
Best to park in the official parking garage at Feldberg village, near the Ski ressort, located here: Dr.-Pilet-Spur 2, 79868 Feldberg (Schwarzwald). Click on the P in the map to get directions. From there you can explore the area on foot. The walking route that is shown on the map is 10 km.
On sunny days and particularly on weekends the area is very popular. It is highly recommended to start the visit early in the morning. More information about the area and an interesting exhibition about nature and wildlife in the Black Forest at "Haus der Natur", close to the parking garage. And, please remember that the area is protected. It is strictly forbidden to leave the official tracks.
