The highest mountain in Western France offers great views and good birdwatching. More than 120 bird species have been seen here.
Mont des Avaloirs, with its 416 meters, is the highest mountain in Western France. It is higher than the surrounding area. On the mountain of Les Avaloirs there is a watchtower of 18.5 meters high. On the top you have a 360 degree panorama. So during bird migration, this is a nice lookout. But birding in the surroundings is better. The small mountain is located in the middle of the Regional Natural Park of Normandie-Maine, a protected nature reserve with lots of forest, but also big open areas with heather and small scale hedged farmland. A special program of the EU is running in the area to protect moták pilich and lelek lesní.
Parking is possible near the observation tower (see the P on the map). From there you can make many different walks. The route shown on the map is 11 km and runs mostly through forest and also some open areas.
