The eastern cape of Riuttasaari island is an excellent autumn migration hot spot. It's worth visiting also during late spring and summer.

Description

The eastern cape of Riuttasaari island provides about a 180 degrees view over the lake Mallasselkä to north east sector, from where many birds, especially waterfowl and shorebirds arrive during autumn migration. During summer it's a great place too see potáplice severní and potáplice malá. orel mořský is also a regular visitor.

Access

The Mallasselkä - Riuttasaari area is located on the eastern side of Valkeakoski town. The easiest way to get there is a car or bicycle. The nearest bus stop is about 1,1 km away, along the Valkeakoski - Pälkäne road. You may park your car at Valmarinniemi, either at Valmarintie 98 or Valmarintie 104. Press a P on the map for directions. From the parking place, you should walk about 500 metres northeast to reach the eastern cape. If you come by bicycle, you may cycle about 250 metres closer, after that the wide path changes to a narrow, stony trail. Reserve at least two hours to visit the Riuttasaari.

In the eastern cape, there is also a nice fire place, but you need to bring yourself either firewoods or charcoals, if you wish to grill something.
