Description
Borreby Mose is a large area with bog and reedbeds. Around the bog are extensive meadows used for grazing. Despite attempts to drain and cultivate, today the site is protected under Natura 2000 and serves as a vital refuge for birds. The reedbeds host breeding bukač velký, moták pochop, sýkořice vousatá, rákosník proužkovaný, rákosník obecný and occasionally rarities like cvrčilka slavíková and rákosník velký. The wet meadows, shallow pools and muddy edges attract many waders and meadow-birds like břehouš černoocasý, jespák bojovný, čejka chocholatá, vodouš rudonohý, ústřičník velký, kulík písečný, and tenkozobec opačný.
During migration thousands of geese roost in the area, joined by ducks like ostralka štíhlá, lžičák pestrý, čírka obecná and polák chocholačka. Winter brings morčák malý, hohol severní, and moták pilich. A regular resident is orel mořský. Less common birds that visit Borreby Mose include rybák velkozobý and lyskonoh úzkozobý. Every year rarities turn up in the area, especially during migration. For example jespák skvrnitý and čáp černý have been observed.
