The Postalm is Austria’s largest alpine pasture plateau. A good starting point for many hikes and nice way to see alpine birds along the way.
The Postalm has many well-marked hiking trails at all levels of difficulty so you can explore the area the way you want. On the 8.5 km hike indicated on the map below, you walk through alpine meadows, forests and along rocky walls and reach beautiful viewpoints. Along the way you can encounter alpine birds like kavče žlutozobé, pěvuška podhorní, krkavec velký, orel skalní and Ořešník kropenatý and if you are lucky some orlosup bradatý or sup bělohlavý, although these vultures are a rare sight here. Sometimes tetřev hlušec are seen along the alpine road that leads to the Postalm. But again, you have to be very lucky for that.
The Postalm in Salzburger Land is easily reached via the Postalm alpine road from May until October. Note that this is a toll road, you pay 6 euros per person (it's free when you have a Salzburgerland Card). Many parking spots along the wide mountain road also act as the starting point for hiking trails. On the Postalm itself you can choose from different signposted trails depending from 2 to 10 km. Whatever trail you choose, be sure to wear good walking boots.
The trail shown on the map is 8,5 km. There are no steep slopes in this walk, the 325 altimeters to be made are very gradual. The walk takes you about 3 to 4 hours. You can follow the signs, of follow the route with your phone on the map below. The route starts in the large parking lot in front of restaurant Lienbachhof . To go there click on the P on the map.
