Local nature reserve based on small lake. Private hide managed by Northumberland Wildlife Trust, plus a public hide open at all times. Wildfowl and woodland.
Holywell Pond is a small lake near the villages of Holywell and Seaton Delaval, with reedbeds and some woodland. A wader scrape in the suotheast corner (in front of the public hide) can attract passage waders; there are also some flash pools in fields to the east that can also attract waders. Wildfowl and woodland birds at main lake. Some of the birds you can encounter are Common Pochard, Northern Shoveler, Common Teal, Common Gull, Short-eared Owl, Little Grebe, Northern Lapwing, Eurasian Oystercatcher and Common Tern.
Path from Holywell village (500m to the south), where there is limited on-street parking. Can also be accessed from The Avenue (A190) to the north, with limited parking opposite road to New Hartley - walk south along former railway for 1.5km. The flash pools will become visible to the right, with path right to main lake just south. Also worth scanning left across fields to the south of Seaton Delaval Hall for wintering European Golden Plover and Short-eared Owl.
