Description

First things first, it is complicated and quite expensive to get to Utklippan. Finally there ( its a one hour boat ride) it is tricky to find accomodations outside summer and tourist season (a hostel) . There are facilities at the banding station but its reserved for the personel. So, to be there in the most interesting time of year you more or less have to be a part of the crew at the bandingstation.

With that sorted Utklippan is an exiting island where anything can happen. The site is good to observe the migration of seafowl and, in good weather conditions, a lot of passerines rest there. Its location far out in the Baltic Sea implies that the island is the first or last stop for migrating birds, a magnet for rarities. Over the years exiting species as Yellow-breasted Bunting, Black-headed Bunting, Rock Bunting, Citrine Wagtail, Alpine Accentor, Siberian Accentor, Desert Wheatear, White-throated Robin, Rosy Starling, Subalpine Warbler, Sardinian Warbler and Radde's Warbler have been banded.

The breeding birds of the islands are more scarce: Common Eider, Lesser Black-backed Gull, Black Guillemot and a colony of Razorbill. Utklippan consist of two small islands, Södraskär and Norraskär. On the south is the banding station and the hostel, on the north the harbour. S of Södra skär is a big cliff, Degerhuvud, where the Razorbill can be seen.
