Description

Tysjöarna Nature Reserve is important for migratory water fowl and for breeding birds including Common Pochard, Ruff and Garganey. Other birds that can be observed in the area are Whooper Swan, Common Crane, Tufted Duck, Common Goldeneye, Little Gull, Northern Lapwing and Common Redshank. The two lakes are connected by a signposted path. Three towers for birdwatching have been built in the area. As early as April, the air around Tysjöarna is filled with the songs of cranes and the trumpeting of the swans. In May and June, the marl fields and the lakes’ shorelines are full of waders. These include Temminck's Stint and Little Stint.

Access

Tysjöarna Nature Reserve is located just outside Östersund’s center. Three entrances are available to choose from. North: follow the E14 west from Östersund, take a right in the Ås-korset and drive towards Kännåsen. Road signs show the way to the parking lot. South: follow Tysjövägen in Lugnvik to its end. West: follow the E14 west from Östersund, five kilometers from the city there is a long exit with a rest area. Click on a P in the map for directions. By bus: Take bus number 8 from Östersund city centre towards Lugnvik, step off at Färgargränd. Follow the road and pass (ICA Nära) against industriområdet. Walk by the sidewalk under the viaduct towards Tysjövägen where you turn left.

You get around the area on trails. If you do all the trails that are indicated on the map you walk about 9 km, but you can alos do half. In wet and rocky places, there are footbridges and there is also a kilometer-long wooden ramp. It looks like a very long jetty that is wide enough for a wheelchair or walker to get around. The wooden ramp leads from the parking lot to the north to a bird tower on the west side of the north lake.

The bird tower on the east side of the northern lake can be reached if you turn off the wooden ramp and follow a path through the forest. That trail is one kilometer. Also at the south lake there is a bird tower. You can walk there along Semsån from Tysjövägen in Lugnvik. You can also get there if you start from the parking lot next to the E14.
