Description
The Mosselwiel is the lowest part of the Zijpe polder, hence the very wet grasslands. What makes the Mosselwiel unique is that the area can be explored excellently by walking along the Zijperdijk. This is the former sea dike with the Wadden Sea. The Anna-Paulowna polder was drained in 1846, the Zijperdijk then lost its primary function as a sea dike but now offers a fantastic view over the Mosselwiel.
Especially in the spring during the migration of many meadow birds and wading birds, from an hour before sunset there is a lot of hustle and bustle when large groups of Northern Lapwing, Eurasian Oystercatcher, Black-tailed Godwit look for their resting place. A telescope is recommended, you can then look further into the area including the duck decoy and the "Land van Adam de Wit". The duck decoy has a visitor centre and, like the "Land van Adam de Wit", is managed by Landschap Noord-Holland, see the site for possible excursions.
What makes the "Land van Adam de Wit" unique is that there has never been any 'modern farming', no liquid manure, heavy tractors and a large number of cattle. This makes it a biotope like in the fifties, Landschap Noord-Holland mows late in the season for example and manages it as a 'wet hayfield'.

Nederlands: De Mosselwiel is een weidevogelreservaat dat sinds 2006 wordt beheerd door Landschap Noord-Holland in een uithoek van voormalige polder Zijpe. Dit gebied is het laagste gedeelte van de polder Zijpe, vandaar de plas-dras graslanden. De polder heeft geen ringvaart maar werd (jargon) gespuid bij laag water. Wat de Mosselwiel uniek maakt, is dat het gebied uitstekend is te verkennen lopende over de Zijperdijk. Dit is de voormalige zeedijk met de Waddenzee. De Anna-Paulowna polder werd in 1846 drooggelegd, de Zijperdijk verloor vervolgens zijn primaire functie als zeedijk maar biedt nu een fantastisch uitzicht over de Mosselwiel.
Zeker in het voorjaar tijdens de trek van veel weide- en wadvogels, vanaf een uur voor zonsondergang is het een drukte en geruzie van belang als grote groepen Northern Lapwing, Eurasian Oystercatcher, Black-tailed Godwit hun rust- en foerageerplaats zoeken. Een telescoop is aanbevelenswaardig, je kijkt dan verder het gebied in tot en met de eendenkooi en het "Land van Adam de Wit". De eendekooi heeft een bezoekerscentrum en wordt net als het "Land van Adam de Wit" beheert door Landschap Noord-Holland, kijk op de site voor eventuele excursies.
Tot slot, wat het "Land van Adam de Wit" uniek maakt, is dat er nooit op 'moderne manier' is geboerd, geen kunst- of drijfmest, zware tractoren en een grote hoeveelheid vee. Dit maakt het een biotoop als in de jaren vijftig, Landschap Noord-Holland maait bijvoorbeeld laat in het seizoen en beheert het als 'vochtig hooiland'. Deze keuze is gemaakt omdat, een boerderij met boomsingel het primair minder geschikt voor broedresultaat van weidevogels maakt.

Access
The Mosselwiel is located between 'Zand and Anna Polowna. The most practical way to get there is from 't Zand via the Korte Bosweg, after 2.5 kilometers turn left at the T-junction, then another 500 meters along the road to the place where the road crosses the Zijperdijk. If necessary, you can park your car before passing the Zijperdijk. Press P on the map for directions to the parking spot. On that dike there is a gate and information board. The route is then self-explanatory, along the dike to the 'Jaagpad', this last part is less attractive due to the view of an industrial estate. The circular route is about 5 km.

Nederlands: De Mosselwiel ligt tussen 'Zand en Anna Polowna. Het meest praktische is vanaf 't Zand via de Korte Bosweg, na 2,5 kilometer op de T-splitsing links af, vervolgens nog 500 meter over de weg naar de plaats waar de weg de Zijperdijk kruist. Eventueel kan je de auto parkeren voor de passage van de Zijperdijk. Druk op P in de kaart voor een routebeschrijving naar de parkeerplek. Op die dijk staat een hek met 'overstap' en infobord. De route spreekt dan voor zich, over de dijk tot aan het 'Jaagpad', dit laatste deel is minder aantrekkelijk i.v.m. het zicht op een industrieterrein. De rondwandeling is ongeveer 5 km.
