Redesigned stream valley is now a new nature reserve of 40 hectares with lots of wet nature.
In 2008 the Olde Kene nature reserve was created along the edge of the city of Hoogeveen. The area has been laid out to realize multiple functions ranging from recreation area for Hoogeveen, water retention, helophyte filter (green filter to purify water) and ecological corridor. Through the area, the water of the stream Old Diep now makes its way through a newly constructed, strongly meandering course. Among the birds you can see are Common Kingfisher, Common Cuckoo, Reed Bunting, Bluethroat, European Stonechat, Garganey and Water Rail.
