Description

The Longarini lagoon is a wetland area of about 200 hectares located in the territory of Ispica, a few hundred meters from the coast. It is the largest of a complex of marshes that extend between Ispica and Pachino. The lagoon attracts a wide array of species throughout the year. In winter one can see Greater Flamingo, several species of ducks, Eurasian Coot, Northern Lapwing, different species of herons, Western Marsh Harrier, Common Kingfisher, Penduline Tit and more. During migration, the area attracts several typical wetland species, including waders such as Common Greenshank and Black-winged Stilt, as well as migratory ducks like Garganey and Ferruginous Duck. The site is one of the last places where Marbled Teal breeds in Italy. Re-introduced Purple Swamphen can also be seen.
