Description

Lago Matese is a beautiful alpine lake situated in the Matese Regional Park. The lake covers a surface area of 5 square kilometres and is 15 metres deep at its deepest point. It stands at an elevation of 1,011 metres above sea level. The lake attracts many ducks and is a rest and feeding area for many birds during migration. Among the birds you can encounter are Garganey, Common Teal, Ferruginous Duck, Little Grebe, European Turtle Dove, Common Cuckoo, Common Crane, Black-winged Stilt, Common Greenshank, Wood Sandpiper, Great Bittern, Little Bittern, Purple Heron, Squacco Heron, Black-crowned Night Heron, Glossy Ibis, Eurasian Spoonbill, European Honey-buzzard, Short-toed Snake Eagle, Golden Eagle, Western Marsh Harrier, Red Kite, Black Kite, Eurasian Scops Owl, Eurasian Hoopoe, Red-backed Shrike, Red-billed Chough and Common Raven.

Lago Matese is situated in the Matese Regional Park, within the Province of Caserta. The lake can be reached by car. There is a road that runs along the entire perimeter but best option is to park and explore the banks on foot. Click on the P in the map for directions.
