A sheltered inlet with intertidal mudflats that holds large numbers of waterbirds at both high and low tide. Also good for raptors in winter.
Hopeland is part of the Wexford Harbour and Slobs special protection area and in winter it holds nationally important numbers of Brent Goose and Common Shelduck.
Low tide is best for the most variety of species, particularly waders, but high tide is also good for large roosting flocks and for ducks such as Common Goldeneye, Long-tailed Duck and Red-breasted Merganser. Merlin can be readily encountered in the area in winter, while Hen Harrier can also be observed on occasion.
The Hopeland area is easily accessed by driving north from Rosslare Strand village with multiple parking options, either in the village itself or by the rock wall at the top of Hopeland. Click on a P in the map for directions.
Hopeland has recently become a regular site for Eurasian Spoonbill in winter with 1-2 birds seen over the last few years. Sightings of Short-eared Owl and Western Marsh Harrier are also becoming more frequent.
