The Wiesmet is a large complex of wetland and meadows and home of several highly endangered wetland breeders.
Originally, the Wiesmet used to be a lot larger than today comprising also the area of the Altmühlsee (which was established only some decades ago). It's still one of the most important areas for meadow related breeders in Bavaria, although some of its characteristic species have recently almost disappeared, such as (Ευρασιατική) Τουρλίδα, (Ευρωπαϊκή) Λιμόζα and Κοκκινοσκέλης (now only irregularly breeding).
Apart from breeding season a visit in winter can also be worthwile. Χειμωνόκιρκος and with luck Βαλτόμπουφος, Νανογέρακο and Χιονογερακίνα can be observed hunting in the area. Check flooded areas for gulls, geese and Αγριόκυκνος. Migration brings usually hundreds of (Ευρωπαϊκή) Καλημάνα and (Ευρωπαϊκό) Βροχοπούλι, as well as in lower numbers Μαχητής and other waders.
During breeding season it is prohibited to enter the site, but the paths around it are accessible all over the year. On the map you find two spots, which are worth a try: 1.) The road that links Muhr a. See and Streudorf and 2.) a little elevation northeast of Mörsach. The Wiesmet can easily be combined with a visit to the Altmühlsee.
