Wetland habitat surrounded by forest patches and open fields.
West of Schlaitz, the Tiefkippe Schlaitz is a nature reserve consisting of a wetland habitat that emerged from a former mining pit that became too wet for agricultural use after the groundwater rose again. It is surrounded by forest patches and open fields, making this area home to a large variety of birds. Among others, you can find species such as Lesser Spotted Woodpecker , Marsh Tit , Red-backed Shrike and potentially even a Osprey , which has an artificial nest (although often contested by other raptors) There's a live cam linked in the links section below. There was a successful breeding attempt in 2024.
Due to the structure of the area and the accessibility, birdwatching is partly difficult.
This area is also home to European beavers.
Tiefkippe Schlaitz is located directly west of the town of Schlaitz. Go through Schlaitz and follow the Freiheitsstraße, you'll end up at a parking lot (marked P on the map). From there, you can follow a circular route by foot or bike. The circular route is about 5,5 km.
