An artificial lake in the Lusatian Lakeland (Lausitzer Seenland) with a small bird island in the middle.
The Stoßdorfer See is a great spot to watch a larger number of Caspian Gull on the small bird island in the middle of the lake. Beside this, you can also spot Black-headed Gull, Great Cormorant, Red-crested Pochard, Mallard, Gadwall, Greylag Goose, Mute Swan, Egyptian Goose, Great Reed Warbler, Reed Bunting and more.
In the surroundings of the lake, you'll also be able to find Icterine Warbler, Common Cuckoo, Hooded Crow, Golden Oriole, Yellowhammer, Common Chaffinch, Blackbird, Common Starling, Blackcap, Greater Whitethroat, Lesser Whitethroat, Common Chiffchaff, Common Nightingale etc.
The next village is Stöbritz, which offers a direct road to the Stoßdorfer Lake. On the Western side of the lake, there are plenty of spots for fishermen where one can park a car. On the same road, you can walk along the side of the lake and have a few spots where you have a nice view on the lake as well as the bird island.
This lake is heavily used by fishermen which also causes a bit of trouble for the birds. While the birds - and their island - are theoretically protected, some fishermen don't care much, unfortunately. For example, they illegally cut down the only tree on the island where a small Great Cormorant colony was breeding. Without much success, though, because the Great Cormorant still breed on the tree stumps and on the ground now. So, while the fishermen throw tons of food into the lake for all the fishes to prosper, birds trying to take some are apparently a problem.
To sum it up: when encountering the lake with an obvious interest in birds, be prepared for some "comments" about birds and how they are a problem.
