Description
The Moosburger Stausee is a 2 km long reservoir on the Mittlere-Isar-Kanal, which is completely surrounded by a concrete dam. It attracts a large number of water birds, especially in winter. In addition to the common species such as Mute Swan, Greylag Goose, Eurasian Coot, Great Crested Grebe, Goosander, Gadwall, Common Pochard,Tufted Duck, Great Cormorant and Black-headed Gull, less common birds like Black-necked Grebe, Greater White-fronted Goose, Common Goldeneye, Eurasian Wigeon, Red-crested Pochard, Northern Shoveler, Smew and Little Gull also overwinter on the lake. Rarities that can be seen quite regularly include Red-throated Diver, Black-throated Diver,Red-necked Grebe, Slavonian Grebe, Red-breasted Merganser, Greater Scaup, Long-tailed Duck and Velvet Scoter.
In the eastern part of the lake there is a small island on which Yellow-legged Gull and Greylag Goose breed in the summer.
During migration, Garganey, Common Tern, Black Tern and Eurasian Hobby can often be seen on and over the lake. When the water level is low, mudflats are sometimes exposed, and many waders can be observed there. In general, however, the nearby Echinger Stausee is more suitable for waders.

The Moosburger Stausee is difficult to reach by public transport. You can either cycle from Moosburg train station about 5 km to the lake or take bus 687 to the stop "Moosburg Uppenbornstraße". From there, however, you have to walk 500m along a busy road with no footpath. The lake is much easier to reach by car. It is located immediately west of the "Moosburg Nord" exit of the A92. There is a small car park at the southeast end of the lake. Press P on the map for directions. You can walk along the dam path along the lake shore.
