A forest of mediterranean woodland where strawbery trees and stone pine are also present. It is located 20 minutes away from Byblos.
Bentael Forest Nature Reserve is a protected natural area on the right bank of Bentael River that covers 110 hectares. The main interest of the forest is the bottleneck effect it has on migratory soaring birds with very important counts (Society for the Protection of Nature in Lebanon, 2014).
Bentael Nature Reserve is located about eight kilometers east of Byblos. A car is needed for access via the road from Byblos to the town of Bentael. Usually, the gate to the reserve is closed and contacting the reserve personnel is needed for access. The forest offers several signposted hiking trails. Although the total reserve just covers two square kilometers - ranging between 300 and 850 meters above sea level - you can easily spend a few hours. The paths are narrow and mostly very steep.
